Chapter 3

My heart didn’t stop pounding as we walked through the forest, and my fear made me see and hear things that weren’t there. It got so bad that Sonia noticed it and tried to make me relax. “Don’t worry, there’s nothing there, and we’re arriving.”

Now that she said it, I looked ahead and saw the three-stories-high building where we spent the night. The station would be on the other side, and hopefully Anya and Jen would be alright: the Reapers had been moving from another direction, and they shouldn’t have passed near them.

It seemed luck was on our side for once. Anya and Jen were surprised to see us come back so soon, but once Sonia explained they understood, and we grabbed our things and holed ourselves in the apartment. I spent the next hours with my weapon, an old metal baseball bat Emma gave me before leaving Undertown, in hand.

Time passed slowly and I ruined my nails while I waited, biting them down to the flesh. I don’t know how many times I moved to the apartment’s window and looked down, hoping for a sign of Emma’s presence, but after a bit Sonia made me stop. She understood I was worried, but if there were Reapers around there was a risk they would see me.

So I waited, and waited, and then waited a little more until the sun started to set, until my heart despaired. It only really settled down when I saw Emma entering the apartment, and then I rushed towards her and took her in a hug, holding on with all of my strength. She was pale, and weak and tired, but she smiled and kissed me when I pressed my mouth against hers.

I didn’t even care that the others were around, seeing the show. The only thing that mattered was Emma: I needed to touch her, taste her, make sure she was really there and alright.

She smiled when we parted, and I replied in kind, but her visage soon grew serious, and I realized how worried she was. “Gather around, people.” She met the gaze of each of us before gesturing towards an old sofa that somehow survived all these years. “We need to talk.”

She was really pale, and for a moment I didn’t want to leave her side, fearing she would faint, but she gestured again for me to move, and I couldn’t deny I was curious.

“I followed the Reapers to the center of town.” She started, then paused and shook her head. She opened her mouth once or twice, and closed it without saying anything, obviously bothered, then shook her head. “They’re far better organized than I ever imagined they could be, and there’s hundreds of them around.”

“What? How?” Jen was obviously surprised, and I saw her fist her hands in her clothes, fear taking hold of her. She wasn’t exactly a pretty woman, being older than the rest of us and having a somewhat plain face, but fear only made her look worse.
